The glitzy ceremony, dubbed Britain’s ‘gay Oscars’ took place at London’s Landmark Hotel.

Barton, the former Marseille, Newcastle and Manchester City midfielder, has been hailed having fought to eradicate homophobia from football and was recognised for his efforts by readers of the popular gay magazines.

He beat off competition from ex-England rugby star Ben Cohen, breakfast TV presenter Lorraine Kelly and Absolutely Fabulous’ Jennifer Saunders for the honour.

The QPR star was presented with his award by TV presenter Paul O’Grady, having attended the awards in the company of his gay uncle, Tom Barton.

“I am proud to support campaigns aimed at eradicating homophobia from football and I will continue to do so,” said Barton upon receiving his award.

“There is no place for it anywhere.”

And Barton, 31, also took the opportunity to pay tribute to his uncle.

“My uncle Tom is gay, and he’s here with me tonight. He was a great role model to me when I was growing up. He just happens to be a man who likes men. It’s no big deal.”

Over 300 VIPs were in attendance at the awards including Olympic diver Tom Daley – who won the Sports Personality of the Year award – TV presenter Paul O’Grady, Graham Norton, and Holly Johnson – frontman of 80s pop group Frankie Goes to Hollywood – who was awarded the Lifetime Achievement honour.
