LITTLE ROCK, Ark. (KTHV) – In downtown Little Rock, a couple’s dream home was spray painted with hate speech and gang symbols. Neighbors are worried after the incident while the homeowners are puzzled.

Trey and Carl Willis are a couple who bought the fixer-upper on Louisiana Street back in February 2016. Since then, they have been slowly working to get it remodeled. On Saturday, while visiting the home, they found symbols spray painted on the windows. Now they worry that their future home has become a target.

“Louisiana Street, oh my God, it’s one of my most favorite street in all of downtown Little Rock,” Trey said. “It’s just full of some of the best homes.”

It makes perfect sense to purchase a home in downtown Little Rock, especially with quiet neighbors, nice homes, and an investment in a community undergoing change.

“I finally got the opportunity to buy one of these and it’s just been a dream to restore a historic property and that’s what I am working on,” Trey said.

While out volunteering in their soon-to-be neighborhood they found the graffiti on their outside windows. Among the phrases spray painted on the windows were the n-word, butt boys and the gang symbol MS-13. MS-13, or Mara Salvatrucha, is an international gang that spreads from the United States to as far as Central America.

Trey and Carl immediately contacted Little Rock police and filed a report. For the Willis’ the graffiti is uncharacteristic for the downtown neighborhood that they’ve grown to love.

“There are so many people that have embraced me and made moving here such a welcoming experience,” Trey said. “I just knew that they’d be gutted for me when they saw this.”

he couple took to Facebook where they alerted neighbors. Both personally and online, the two have received large amounts of support from neighbors wanting to help clean up the mess.

“Every time someone has made a comment, ‘sorry about that [or] is there anything we can do?’ It’s silly, but it’s almost like a hug,” Trey said.

It’s those digital hugs keeping the two hopeful as they continue towards the goal of fixing and moving into the house and that process continues with removing the hate speech.

“We’re going to fix this baby up and make it shine and it’s costing everything I’ve brought across with me to the states,” Trey said. “This is a huge investment and all I want to do is make the neighborhood a better place.”

The couple does plan on adding cameras to the home, but they’re hoping that this doesn’t happen again. If it does though they’ll be able to see who’s responsible.
